Minnesota Twins Outfielder, Lew Ford, was born August 12th, 1976 in Port Neches, Texas. He played baseball at Port Neches High School and later attended Dallas Baptist University. He was drafted in the 12th round of the 1999 amateur draft by the Boston Red Sox. He was traded to the Minnesota Twins in 2000 for pitcher, Hector Carrasco.
Lew has been a Minnesota Twins fan favorite from the beginning for his enthusiasm on the field and fun-loving personality. Fans will chant “Leeeeeeeeewww” after he makes a big play. It took an explanation from Twins manager Ron Gardenhire for Lew to realize the fans were not booing him.
Known for his quick bat this right-handed hitter loves to jump all over inside pitches. Many of the balls hit hardest by Lew end up as fouls down the third baseline. Most of his home runs and extra base hits end up on the left side of the field. He has a decent base on balls percentage due to his quick bat and ability to foul off pitches. Lew likes to take outside pitches inside when he is having luck at the plate. If he figures out how to elevate the ball he could become a legitimate home run threat.
Lew Ford has proven he can be an aggressive and capable base runner. His quick first step has made him great base stealer. His strong arm together with his quickness and accuracy makes Lew a great defensive outfielder.
During his short stint in the Major Leagues Lew Ford has already won his share of awards and accomplishments. During the week of August 21st, 2005 Lew was named American League player of the week. Ford was instrumental in helping the Twins take three out of four games from the Seattle Mariners that week after going 12 for 33, including 3 home runs, and leading the league in RBI’s.
It will be interesting to see what Lew brings to the table for the Minnesota Twins in 2006.
