Zelo Restaurant (Pronounced Zay Low) is located
right on Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis. The intersection
of 9th and Nicollet defines the location of Zelo
and it couldn't be better. The outdoor seating
at Zelo provides a great spot to relax and people
watch over an excellent meal and a drink. Inside
Zelo you'd describe it as gothic but in a good
way.
A statuesque hostess pulls aside black velvet
drapes to lead you to your table. Gothic, vaulted
ceilings soar overhead, while stylishly dressed
diners occupy intimate banquettes. The decor is
almost theatrical--dark, sumptuous fabrics, murky
lighting, gold accents--but it works to marvelously
dramatic effect. The elegant bar area, just past
the dining room, stays busy from cocktail hour
well into the wee hours. Service is friendly.
The crowd is almost uniformly young, hip and good-looking,
punctuated by the occasional gaggle of tourists
wandering in off Nicollet Mall.
The Italian-influenced menu fights
to live up to the glamour of the surroundings.
The affetato misto--a giant appetizer platter
stacked with olives, crudites, meats, cheeses,
breadsticks and bruschetta--is overwhelming. The
upscale menu holds fresh seafood specials, chewy
brick-oven pizzas, creamy risottos and hearty
pork and beef entrees. Delicate, sweet sesame-crusted
walleye is a revelation. Finish with the luscious,
oozy chocolate budino cake.
The atmosphere is impressive as is the food. The
staff at Zelo is great and really helpful navigating
the menu if you can't decide. Zelo comes highly
recommended from all crowds from business to theater
goers looking to grab an excellent meal after
a show.
