Minnesota
Twins Pitcher, Dave Gassner, was born on December
14, 1978, in Hortonville, Wisconsin. He is a 1997
graduate of Hortonville (WI) High School and a
2002 graduate of Purdue University with a degree
in Education. He enjoys playing golf, but has
a true passion for baseball. He was drafted in
the 24th round by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2001.
He was traded to the Twins in 2003 in a deal that
exchanged Shannon Stewart and Bobby Kielty. Dave
spent time in the Minors and was 26 years old
when he broke into the big leagues on April 16,
2005.
In the minors in 2003, Dave did not allow an earned
run in 6 of 8 appearances (3 starts) going 0-1,
1.61 (22.1 ip, 4 er). He was selected to Eastern
League All-Star Game and tied for club lead in
wins and led the club and the league in ERA.
In 2004, he had 16 wins and pitched a scoreless inning
in the Triple-A All Star Game. He went at least five innings
every start and at least six innings in 20 of 28 starts.
He allowed no runs in six of his starts. He led the club
in wins, games started and innings pitched. He was second
in strikeouts. He was named to International League Post-Season
All-Star team.
If Dave can continue his minor league
success in the big leagues, he could earn a spot
on the starting line-up of the Twins bullpen.
He has excellent control, and is a tough lefty
for opposing batters. He has positive leadership
and good game stamina. Spring training will be
crucial for Dave to see if he can earn a spot
with the big boys!
