Bullpen Coach, Rick Stelmaszek, was born October 8,
1948 in Chicago, IL. He attended DePaul University,
studying liberal arts. He was drafted in the 11th round
by the Washington Senators in 1967. He was signed by
Jack Sheehan, the same scout wsho signed his father.
Rick has always had a passion for baseball and
has earned many awards for his excellent playing. In
1966, he was named to Western Carolina League All-Star
team, and in 1970 he was an Eastern League All-Star
selection. He made his major league debut in 1971 vs.
New York. It wasn’t until 1973 that he got his
first major league hit when he singled off Nolan Ryan
in California. He was then traded to California with
first baseman Mike Epstein and pitcher Rich Hand for
pitcher Lloyd Allen and first baseman Jim Spencer.
In 1974, he was traded again to the Chicago Cubs for
pitcher Horacio Pina. Playing for the Cubs, he had his
lone big league home run, off Don Sutton, in Los Angeles.
In 1976, he was traded again to the New York Yankees
for pitcher Gerry Pirtle. In 1978, he traded in his
playing glove and joined the Twins organization as manager
of Wisconsin Rapids.
In 1980, Rick was named Midwest League Manager of the
Year. In 1992 and 1998, he was the Bullpen coach for
American League All-Star team. He holds the longevity
record for the Twins coaches; 2005 is his 25th season.
