Minnesota
Twins Rookie Outfielder, Alex Romero, was born
on September 9th, 1983 in Maracaibo, Venezuela.
He was signed as a free agent with the Minnesota
Twins in 2000. In 2003, he was ranked by Baseball
America as the Twins' 13th-best prospect prior
to the season. He was named the Twins' Minor League
Player of the Month for July, after going 35-92
(.382) with 7 doubles, 2 home runs and 13 RBI.
The Twins considered calling up Alex after he
hit .301/.354/.458 in 509 AB for Double-A New
Britain, but they decided against it. He moved
up to Double-A in 2004 and could be a candidate
to replace Shannon Stewart in 2007.
He is a known competitor and has very strong loyalties
to his teammates. He was suspended for three games
after a bench clearing brawl in 2004. Alex sprinted
to home plate from center field and “started
punching and kicking everybody,” teammate
Jose Morales said. “I saw my friend go down
and get punched in the head,” Romero said.
“I had to help him.” Although punished
for the poor on-field conduct, Alex still managed
to finish the year strong.
There was no way the Twins would
have gotten away with leaving Alex Romero off
the 40-man roster for the second year in a row.
We will have to wait and see what spring training
will bring for this tough competitor.
